Well it is Saturday and it seems that we have a full day on our plate. The little one has had his bath already and we have lined up for the shower and will be heading out of town for the day. My oldest is waiting for us to come and pick him up as he missed his bus from school yesterday and at the same time, we will be participating in our Nisga’a Culture.
Today five headstones are being moved and with any stone moving, the extended family of each tribe has a part to play. Whether it be in preparing refreshments, providing treats for the children or simply setting up chairs for the actual moving of the stone, everyone has their part.
As a member of the Frog Tribe I will be there to help out in the Feast Hall tonight even though the Hosts are not from the same House as I am, we are all Ganada (Frogs) and we do our part. This ensures that we our own family/House puts up a feast, they will be there to help as well. That is a tenet of our culture. More than “getting out what you put in”, our society is an old one that has survived attempted assimilation and the weight of Christianity. The latter we have worked into our lives and have made it our own. Nisga’anized if you will. =)
Given our cultural duties and responsibilities, there is one thing that is the foundation of all that we do. Family.
Today my wife and I get to meet the newest member of our Family. Our God Daughter has a sister of her own and we can’t wait to meet our new niece. So looking forward to that. Within three hours of this post, I will be at my inlaws’ and will have met the new baby. Can’t wait. =) We will also get to see family that we haven’t seen in a little while (brother and sister in law for example, not to forget out god daughter).
I am sure that we will be able to see other members of the family that we see more often and it will be good to see them once again.
Then there is the extended family of the Tribe and while I couldn’t get off of work yesterday to attend the Tribal Feast, I have been to enough of them to know what work is to be done today and so I will be there to help out where I can.
The sun is out and while we are missing out on some prime Painting Time for the Church Fence that we have been working on for the past month, it will be a good day nonetheless.
So with that, I will leave my home and my virtual home for the day but I will be back to make sure that my good friend Katie gets her birthday blog because she totally deserves it. =) Happy Birthday tomorrow Katie!! =)
