It has become a standard status message that is meant to show others that you are signed in but not necessarily ‘online’. I guess even something as simple as being online can be divided up into categories when you apply “real world” usage to it.
Real world usage: In essence this is simply human usage, practicality, what really happens when you release a new online game, things that you can try to plan for but can never be fully ready for.
What I am trying to get at is the status message of “user is away…” was meant as a consideration, a form of online etiquette to better the online communications of people. Well that was on paper so to speak and I don’t think it’s like that, at all.
I say this because there are days when I don’t want to talk to anyone online so I set my status to away. I just wanted you to know that there are some days that I am not in a mood to discuss anything with anyone so I guess it is actually doing something to better online communications.
However, given our digital distribution era where you can download and update your games via the internet, it does help to be able to set your status as away so that when you are downloading, it doesn’t look like you are trying to ignore or avoid anyone.
Still, it could be that your day to day life has taken over and your online time has been limited. For instance, starting Monday I will be away from the computer a lot more since I accepted a job. I needed to do something and regardless of the job, I am going to go to work. =) Feeling good about that.
It is weird but early this morning at approximately 1:30 AM this morning (July the 9th) I made the decision that once and for all, I am done with my smoking. I took ownership of my habit and I finally said to myself and my brother who is a year younger than I am, that I am done. I told him I have always told myself and made the decision alone that I wanted to quit but this time I think this will be it. I have a witness and I not only want to quit, I am going to. I have decided that whenever I have a craving and I know I will over this weekend but I whenever i want a cigarette, I will simply drink some water.
If that means that I have to go home to get a glass of water, then that is what I will do.
I guess I made the right choice because the job offer came in this morning. =) So as of this Monday I will be working 9 to 5 and I hope near 40 year old body will be able to handle adjustment to the “normal sleeping pattern” routine.
I am hoping that we can find some funds for this weekend, my last free one for a little while. I would love to take the boys in to town so that we can watch the second Transformers movie in the theater but as I told my oldest son, if we have to wait for the DVD/BRD release then that is what we will do.

Yay on the new job and yay on quitting smoking!!!

Well, old man, I know that it CAN be very, very hard, but it IS possible. And no matter what, there can be a time that you won’t want to smoke. I didn’t think it was possible, and no, not everyone just loses the cravings. You also can’t quit if you don’t really want to.
BUT – blog about it. Rant and rave and swear a lot. Bitch at Julie directly about how you want to rip the head off of every person you see today. Just know that you WILL get over it, it just takes time. Take it just one day at a time, and soon, the days make weeks, the weeks, months. Look at G3? Didn’t Heather just go to the hospital like yesterday? And now he’s grabbing things off the table. No, seriously, turn around, he’s grabbing things off the table!
As for the job, good for you. I am a few minutes shy of running through my house with a machete (yes, I have a machete, no Dagger, not because of the Grindhouse Double Bill). However, I find out very soon if I get the grant money to go to school, change careers, and get back to work.
I sorta hope you don’t have to spend a lot of time away from home commuting or overnighting. But, if that is where the well is…

I need a status that says something along the lines of
“yes I am online..no I dont want to chat. It does not mean I am mad or annoyed it simply means I am just checking a few things before I go back to real life and I dont have time to chat”
and one that says
“I am super bored and need someone to keep me company but dont want to bug anyone so please buzz me if you would like to keep me company”
I am with Mike on the whole smoking thing George. I know you can do it this time
And the job will be great! It is in no way a demotion from where you are/were. It may be grunt work, but think about how you will get into better shape and especially with the not smoking anymore how healthy you will get! It will suck at first just like any adjustment, but in the end you will be very glad you did it…and so will Heather *wink wink*

*hugs Jane* and now for my response to NIAC *hugs Jane* =D
Seriously thanks you guys.
I appreciate the comments on the smoking NIAC. I really do want to quit and while it might seem like I am ‘just telling myself that’ at this point, I know that I want to quit and I am sure there will be a point in the very near future where I will face the decision of ’should I have a smoke or not’ and I already know that I don’t.
I can see what it is doing and now that I have felt what it is doing to my lungs, it really is time. Sincerely.
As for the job, I know I can do whatever the job entails, it is just having to readjust to a quote unquote “normal sleeping pattern”. Freakyasssed9to5ers and their driven uhm ness. LOL
It will be great actually, I will have water on hand for those times I feel like I want a smoke and I have already told a few key people that I am done smoking so they know which will make it easier for me to just stop.
I hope you get the grant NIAC and G3 is actually taking a snooze right now, aw man he woke me yup this morning standing beside the bed and the first thing I saw was his smile. =) Great day. =)
I do not have to commute or overnight but I will have to go to bed early and there is thing called Mornings that I will have to face. =P Looking forward to it.

Jane:
In the spirit of thought evolving, perhaps it is time to rethink the standard status messages that are available to us.
It is interesting to consider how something as simple as a status message can mean so much but then again, it is a form of human interaction and communication so it is by no means, simple.
Even though it is meant to be. =)
