Now this is from a purely light hearted viewpoint and is not intended to be of any scientific significance unless someone reads this and then decides they will tackle the idea for their Doctoral Thesis or something in which case I will be expecting royalties, credit etc. Thank you.
I was sitting around with my brother working on Final Fantasy 12 the other night and I have to say that Square Enix did a really good job with this game. Now I will say before I continue that I am not a big Final Fantasy player and have pretty much only the time I have spent with FFXII as previous experience but I do know that the series has gone through many changes and it is not as linear as I thought it was.
I guess my interest in starting to peak for Final Fantasy XIV but if it is a MMO game, probably not. Regardless, I am straying from my blog topic into the vast realms of the Final Fantasy Universe and I guess the Square Enix Universe since I did actually play Dragon quest VIII – Journey of the Cursed King and I loved that game. I may actually start playing it again just because, and on the PS3 to boot. =)
So as I recall from playing Dragon Quest VIII, there was a lot to do and I mean a lot. From a pure save your sanity viewpoint, you do have to save your game a lot. A lot. It is something that my brother and I joked about, “Wait, go back, you only saved it nine times, you have to save it one more time.” =)
We were exaggerating of course but that didn’t stop him from saving his game twice at every save sigul. I also noticed that when he was looking at his Status menu (FFXII) and the Licenses that he wanted to make sure he had an entire section opened before he moved on to another one.
This last tidbit drove me a little mad as I wanted him to buy the licenses for the Ether and Potion upgrades so that he can progress the game rather than stay in a section and comb the entire area before moving on. LOL I am the same way when it comes to a new game or a any RPG for that matter. I haven’t played too many of them but I may play more of them now. I might actually go ahead and see how far the FFXII playable demo will take me.
I might just wait until FFXIV comes out though too.
It made me wonder though when it comes to gamers just how much of our personalities are prone to obsessive compulsive behaviors? It makes me wonder if you could treat OCD with a video game?
From my own experiences I think I can safely say that there are some compulsions when it comes to my gaming. How many of you gamers have thought at the end of a level, “Just one more, it shouldn’t take long.” Yeah it will take long, go to bed already. I will spend hours trying to take an online road time just to see my name listed as owning that road (Burnout Paradise) but I am happy to say that as far as my OCD goes, I am doing pretty good. Maybe we need to look at another acronym rather than the OBSESSIVE Compulsive Disorder, not do away with the OCD mind you but add another one. One where the compulsion is recognized but it is not obsessive and you can function normally in Society. I say that because OCD cases tend to stand out in a crowd.
Well, my sons came in and interrupted my train of thought so I am posting this now. I think I got what I wanted down.

A simple answer to the questions, a resounding YES at least for me anyways.

So, it is weird that you mention FFXII, I started replaying it a few weeks ago. It doesn’t really compare to the other FFs. A lot of people do not like FFXII because of it’s lack of character development in the story. Which to a point is true, however it is not about just the characters, it is about Ivalice, and the game does a great job of making that world feel real and giving it a history.
Have you checked out the Bestiary much? I love it. The “Insights on foes you have defeated” is awesome and most of the time freaking funny. Then once you beat an enemy a certain number of times you unlock more infomation. This info can range from bazaar recipies to how Balthier got the Strahl. If you haven’t read it you should check it out!
I would NOT be able to play FFXII with some one else. I develope my characters a certain way. Fran is my Mage, Balthier is my speedy attacker with a bunch of differnet skills, and Ashe is my tank. I would be afraid that whoever I was playing with would mess them up, LOL! I guess if I was playing with someone else they could use Vaan, Penelo and Basch. I would not want them to touch my characters. I also wouldn’t want them to do any boss fights (What if they don’t steal from the boss!?) or do any story parts…they could walk across the desert…that it’s.
Anyways, I seem to have rambled on…lol. FF does that to me sometimes. How about we talk about MH next!?
As for the Gamer OCD thing, simple answer: YES.

Oh yeah, I forgot to ask, where are you in FFXII? What characters do you use? How are you building them up?

So, as you can see – yes.

Iunno… I’m a little OCD in everyday life anyway. Not much, but a little. My dad has it bad, so he’s hopped up on medication. Apparently enough so that it doesn’t seem like he has it bad.
I need to get back into Final Fantasy. The only one I’ve beaten is VII. I got pretty far into IX, but got sick of it. I think I’ll get back into that one. That way I don’t have to spend money buying a new one.
The problem is it’s too comical. I want the general seriousness of VII, with comedy every now and then to keep it from being depressing. Go Yuffie!
Maybe I’ll restart Dirge of Cerberus. Sure, it’s a shooter, so it doesn’t really count as a Final Fantasy, but it stems off of VII, so the story is cool. Even if some of the voice acting is shite.
Whoa, where am I? I must have rambled my way into your blog. What are we talking aboot?

Yeah, I do display some OCD tendencies in other aspects too. Like M&m’s for instance, for some reason I am complelled to have an even number of each color at all times. Same goes with any candy actually.

Don’t worry, I was too busy gasping for breath on the floor to think of someone to blame… other than myself… but screw taking responsibility for my actions! Damn you Seth!

Hello Jack Hammer and welcome to my blog. I do hope you know that I did not intend to make light of the actual disorder.
It does bring to my mind again whether or not video games would be a good ‘treatment’ of the disorder. I have to ask if you game as well and if you have ever played an RPG.
If your comment was spam, well, thanks for visiting all the same. =)

LOL, Sandra Jack Hammer?
“Someone please STOP this blog, and let my brother, JACK, off”.
Ya, read it a few times. Got a friend from back east talks like that all the time. Only, he says “bus”, not “blog”.

Dagger: FFXII
Well the game is my brother’s game so I have been visiting and watching him play but I guess since this is my blog and I am writing it I can say that it is my game too. =)
We had just gone into the King’s Tomb west of the Westersands.
The Clan Rank is Vanguard with 8 Marks taken care of and he has accepted three more.
I believe we just ranked up to Level 30 and yes he is one who will compulsively go back and do a section a few times so that the rest of his party is at the same level.
He has all of his party at level 25 with a couple of 26ers.
When it comes to the Licenses he has about 80% of them already unlocked and hasn’t even run into about half of what he has purchased the licenses for. He has to fill up a section before moving on to the next one. LOL I am slowly getting him to build up the Potion/Ether/gambit sections.
I have been telling him that he probably hasn’t even scratched the surface of the game but he plays like that. He will get everything before he moves the story along. It is funny to hear him say, “well I guess there is only one thing left to do…” and we both at the same time say “story”. LOL
I did mention to him that we could be stealing from the bosses and I guess we will be trying that at some point as well.
For the most part I will level up enough to move the story but I wonder how many side missions I would miss by doing that.

I cannot, will not on a bus, I will not let Jack off here or there, I will not let Jack off anywhere! I will not let Jack off, I will not let him, Sam I Am…
…crap, this doesn’t rhyme. Oh well. I’ll just say hi since my internet is working for the moment.
Hi everyone! I’m glad to see you’re all surviving without me! And here I thought you didn’t have a hope in hell.
